Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Nursing services in planning,
organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Service
Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and
regulations that govern our facility, and may be directed by the administrator, the Medical
Director, and /or the Director of Nursing Services, to ensure that the highest degree of quality
care is maintained at all times.

Supervise the day-to-day activities of the facility during a tour of duty.
Provide this supervision in accordance with current federal, state and local standards,
guidelines and regulations that govern the facility and as may be required by the Director of
Nursing.
Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures than
govern the day-to-day function of the Nursing Department.
Ensure that all nursing personnel comply with the procedures set forth in the policy manual.
Participate in the Performance Improvement Program for the nursing department.
Ensure sufficient numbers of staff are scheduled to ensure that quality care is maintained.
To assume twenty-four-hour accountability for all clinical services provided in the absence of
the Director of Nursing.
Complete all forms, reports and evaluations as necessary in a timely manner.
Assist with admissions, transfers or discharges of residents as needed.
Make daily rounds of the nursing department to ensure that all nursing personnel are
performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and
regulations that govern the facility.
Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personnel interest and positive emphasis, as
well as a calm environment throughout the shift.
Report occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous
chemicals in accordance with facility policies.
Ensure that any resident with a change in status is evaluated and that the family and
physician are updated.
Assist with nursing procedures as needed.
Report any problem areas to the Director of Nursing.
Assure that nursing work areas are kept clean, neat and safe.
Maintain confidentiality of all resident information.
Ensure that the nursing personnel on your shift adheres to facility infection control practices.
Report any resident complaints, grievances, or allegations of abuse to the Director of
Nursing as outlined in the facility policy and procedure.
Qualifications:
Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or
university, or be a graduate of an approved RN program.
Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in this state.
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
Must have a minimum of two years’ experience in long term care.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such
action.
Must possess IV and CPR certification.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors,
government agencies and the general public.
Must have strong clinical assessment skills.
Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws,
regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long term care.
Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and
supervise other personnel.
Possess the ability to maintain control and respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
Basic computer knowledge.
Professional demeanor with respect to resident’s rights and confidentiality.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances
warrant such action.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, visitors and the
general public.
Must be knowledgeable of medical terminology.
Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with other personnel.
Must possess the ability to minimize waste of supplies, misuse of equipment, etc.
Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as to be
willing to handle residents, staff and visitors based on whatever maturity level
they are currently functioning.
Work Environment:
While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of
resident conditions and elements.
The noise level is moderate to quiet.
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., drug rooms, nurses’ stations, resident
rooms, etc.).
Moves intermittently during working hours. Is subject to frequent interruptions. Is
involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under
all conditions and circumstances.
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and
visitors. Communicates with nursing personnel and other department personnel.
Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions
temporarily, when necessary.
Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation,
post-disaster, etc.).
Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, and exposure to infectious waste.
Diseases, airborne particles, odors, reactions from dust, disinfectants, smoke, & other
air contaminants.
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and
the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Will meet all physical requirements of the position as identified by the facility policies and
procedures related to functional job analysis.
